Grace Bay Beach • Providenciales

Grace Bay Beach, the
foundation of the islands.

Twelve miles of white sand, soft as powder.

Grace Bay Beach runs twelve miles along the northern coast of Providenciales. Repeatedly ranked the best beach in the world by Condé Nast Traveler, TripAdvisor, and World Travel Awards. White sand from end to end, the water shifting through every shade of turquoise.

I - The Water

Reef-protected, glass clear.

Half a mile offshore, the reef breaks the open Atlantic. Inside, every shade of turquoise as the day moves.

The water is calm and clear, the sand soft and fine underfoot. Wide stretches of shallow swim-in access from the beach. The reef itself is open for snorkelling and diving, with shallow corals at the inshore edge and deeper formations beyond.

Beach access points run every few hundred yards along the public road behind the resort row. The whole twelve miles is open to public access, though some stretches are quieter than others. The eastern end, past Bight Reef, is the quietest. The central section, near the resort cluster, is the most populated.

II - What to Do

From the sand to the sea.

The kind of beach where a single day can include a long walk, a swim, a snorkel, and a sunset cruise.

On the  sand.

Walk it end to end (about four hours), or settle in with a book. Beach yoga at first light. Sunset walks. Build castles at the water’s edge. The sand stays cool underfoot even at midday.

On the water.

Snorkel at Smith’s Reef or Bight Reef, both within walking distance of the central beach. Stand-up paddleboard the calm shallows. Swim with the green turtles that come close to shore in the early morning.

On the boat.

Charter a half-day from Blue Haven Marina or Turtle Cove. A morning trip to Iguana Island, a full day to French Cay or West Caicos for the wall dive, a sunset cruise back as the sky turns. Most villas can arrange charters with twenty-four hours’ notice.

A humpback whale plays in the golden sunset light.

III - Where to Eat

The best tables,  just off the sand.

Resort tables on the beach. The best local gems a short walk away.

Coco Bistro.

The grandfather of Provo fine dining. Tasting menus under the palms. Reservations essential, often weeks ahead.

Infiniti at Grace Bay Club.

The long bar reaches out toward the water. Sunset cocktails to start, dinner to close. The view sits at every table.

The Deck  at Seven Stars.

On the sand at Seven Stars, the bay outside. Beach-club lunches that stretch into dinner. Casual at midday, considered at night.

Embers  and Ashes.

A short walk inland from Grace Bay. Casual fine dining without the pretension. The food is the proof; the vibe is the draw. Ashes is just next door. Speakeasy-style cocktail lounge, live music every night. The food keeps up with the bar.

IV - Where to Stay

Close to Grace Bay, not on it.

We’ll take it from there.

The Grace Bay resort row is wonderful for what it is — restaurants, shops, beach clubs, and the famous twelve miles. But the most discerning guests we work with come for Grace Bay during the day, and return to a quieter villa for the evening.

That’s what Hummingbird Luxury offers. A handpicked collection of villas on the quieter shores of Providenciales, each a short drive to Grace Bay’s beaches, restaurants, and shops — but with the privacy, the space, and the silence of a stretch of coast you can call your own for the week.

V - When to Go

Early morning, late afternoon.

The light is best at the edges of the day, and the beach is quietest then too.

Mornings before nine are when the beach belongs to the swimmers, the runners, and the dog walkers. The light is gentle and the sand is cool. This is when the turtles come close.

Late afternoon, from four o’clock onward, the light turns gold and the wind drops. Sunset on the western end of the beach is where everyone gathers, often with a glass of something. It’s the most reliable hour of the day.

Midday is the busiest but also the most photogenic — the water is at its most luminous when the sun is overhead. If you’re after the iconic shot, this is when you take it.

By season.

High season runs December through April. Drier, sunnier, the cooler months for visitors. May through November is quieter, with warmer water and afternoon showers. Hurricane peak is August through October; we plan around it. Whale-watching is best January through April.
