Five Ways to Enjoy the Water in Turks and Caicos
It’s no secret that the Turks and Caicos Islands boast some of the clearest and most spectacular ocean in the Caribbean—and if you’re the kind of person who loves spending more time near, in or on the water than on land, it’s the perfect southern destination.
Be it paddling or kayaking through the lush mangrove ecosystems on Providenciales or exploring nearby sister island of West Caicos, there’s something to do for everyone in the turquoise waters of this picturesque territory. Our concierge team are locals, and having grown up in Providenciales, we’ve been lucky enough to experience the best these beautiful waters have to offer.
Here are just five of the many ways to enjoy the water in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Snorkeling at Smith’s Reef
Residents know it as the best spot to snorkel right from the beach on Providenciales—Smith’s Reef. On the north coast of the island, near Turtle Cove, is a shallow reef system made up of a number of coral heads that host a wide array of life. From spotted eagle rays and hawksbill turtles to octopi and large schools of crevalle jacks, the area is teeming with marine life, no boat needed. It’s easy to access, with just a short swim away from the shoreline.

Paddling through the Mangroves
Dreaming of a kayak or stand-up paddle adventure in the islands’ extensive mangrove forests? These salty estuaries are full of life, and act as nurseries for juvenile sharks, turtles, and bird life. Exploring these protected areas is the perfect opportunity to learn about the incredible eco system surrounding the islands. Whether you are staying with us and choose to explore Chalk Sound in our complimentary clear kayaks or join a tour to paddle through the mangroves at Leeward Going Through, this is a popular activity that our concierges can coordinate for you ahead of, or during, your stay on Providenciales.

Kiteboarding in Long Bay
The powerful tradewinds that pass through Turks and Caicos have made it a kiteboarding mecca. In this adrenaline-packed sport, a large wind kite propels athletes who are strapped to a board across the territory’s crystal-clear waves. On any given day in Long Bay, you’ll see novices and pros alike taking advantage, to ride and perform aerial tricks above Long Bay’s shallows.
Long Bay Beach has become a premier destination for students and experienced kiters due to the shallow waters and these reliable winds. A perfect opportunity to learn for the first time, or to fine-tune your skills.
Exploring West Caicos
Less than 30 kilometres off the coast of Providenciales, West Caicos—the archipelago’s westernmost major island—boasts largely untouched swaths of white sand and azure waters. West Caicos is popular among divers, but there’s a wealth of beauty to explore along its shoreline and just a short trek from the coast. Travellers can spend an afternoon sunbathing on the beach at Bernard Bay, or hike inland to see Lake Catherine, a 500-acre saline lake through which large flocks of Caribbean flamingos love to wade.
